HP ENVY 5540 is an All-in-One printer mainly used for home printing. You can load upto 125 sheets in the main tray and 15 sheets in the photo tray. It is a wireless printer so that it can be easily connected to smartphones, laptops and PC via Wi-Fi. You can also connect the HP Envy 5540 printer to your computer using a USB or Ethernet cable.

However, you may also encounter a few issues on this printer like paper jam, printer offline, printing and scanning issues. On this page, you will see the HP ENVY 5540 troubleshooting methods.

Hp Envy 5540 Troubleshooting

HP ENVY 5540 NOT PRINTING

Clean the Print heads automatically:

  • On your HP ENVY 5540 printer control panel, touch the Settings icon.
  • Touch Tools > Clean Printhead.
  • Now, the printer starts cleaning the printhead and prints a test page.
  • If the print quality is good, touch Done.
  • If the print quality is not satisfactory, touch Clean Again.
  • Your HP ENVY 5540 printer cleans the printhead again and then prints another test page.

Changing the printer properties:

  • Click the Start menu.
  • Type Control Panel in the taskbar and click on it.
  • Click Devices and Printers and right-click on the HP ENVY 5540 printer.
  • Select See what’s printing and choose Printer Properties from the list.
  • Go to port and select IP Address from the list.
  • Enable the SNMP status and click OK.

Use HP Smart app:

  • Open the HP Smart app.
  • Click Printers –>Diagnose & Fix –>Start.
  • Wait until the analysis gets completed.
  • On the Diagnose & Fix screen, view the result.
  • Now print a test page and check whether your printer can print.

HP ENVY 5540 PRINTER OFFLINE

Check the power cord and reset the printer:

  • Check whether the power cord is perfectly connected to the printer.
  • Press the power button to switch on the printer.
  • Turn off the printer and remove the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 15 minutes and plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Turn on the printer.
  • Check whether you can find your printer online.

Set as default printer:

  • First, go to the Windows Start menu.
  • Type Control Panel in the taskbar and click on it.
  • Click Hardware and Sound >Device and Printers.
  • Locate your HP ENVY 5540 printer and right-click on it.
  • Select Set as default printer.

Disable the Offline Printer Option:

  • On your PC, click the Windows icon.
  • Type Control Panel in the taskbar and click on it.
  • Click Devices and Printers and right-click on the HP ENVY 5540 printer.
  • Select See what’s printing. Go to the Printer menu and check if Use printer offline is enabled.
  • If it is enabled, disable the option.

HP ENVY 5540 PRINTING BLANK PAGES

Remove the Breather Tape:

You must remove the Breather tape because this causes a vacuum in the cartridge and will not allow the ink to come out.

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Take out the ink cartridges and check if the breather tape is removed.
  • If not, remove the breather tape.
  • Put the ink cartridges back into their place.
  • Close the ink cartridges access door.

Replace the ink cartridges:

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the empty ink cartridges.
  • Grab the new ink cartridges and remove the orange tape.
  • Insert the tricolor ink cartridge into the left and the black ink cartridge into the right.
  • Push the cartridge until it fits into its place.
  • Close the ink cartridge access door.

HP ENVY 5540 PAPER JAM

The paper jam occurs in multiple areas of your HP printer.

Clear jammed paper from the tray

  • Turn off your HP ENVY 5540 printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from your printer.
  • Remove the paper from the input tray.
  • Look inside the input tray. If you find any foreign materials such as paper clips or any other object, remove them gently.
  • Remove any extra paper or foreign materials from the output tray.
  • Plug the power cord into the rear port of the printer and the electrical wall outlet.
  • Turn on the printer.

Clear jammed paper from underneath the printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from your printer.
  • Slant the printer and rest it on its backside with its bottom facing you.
  • Press the tabs to open the clean-out door.
  • Gently remove the jammed paper or foreign materials from the inside of your printer.
  • Push the clean-out door forward and close it.
  • Keep the printer back to its original state.
  • Plug the power cord into the rear of the printer and the electrical wall outlet.
  • Turn on the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the ink cartridge area

  • Turn off your HP ENVY 5540 printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from your printer and the electrical wall outlet.
  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Gently remove jammed paper inside the ink cartridge access area.
  • Close the ink cartridge access door.
  • Plug the power cord into your printer’s rear port and the electrical wall outlet.
  • Turn on the printer.

HP ENVY 5540 NOT PRINTING WIRELESSLY

Restart your printer:

  • Turn off your HP ENVY 5540 printer and remove the power cord from the printer and the electrical wall outlet.
  • Leave the printer in an ideal state for 10-15 minutes.
  • Now, connect one end of the power cord to the printer and the other to the electrical wall outlet.
  • Turn on your HP ENVY 5540 printer and check whether the problem is resolved.

Connect the printer to your network:

Set up a wireless connection between the HP printer and your network using the Wireless setup Wizard.

  • On your printer, touch the Wireless icon.
  • Touch Setup > Restore Network Defaults or Restore Network Settings.
  • Now, touch Yes to confirm.
  • After the network settings are restored, touch Wireless settings > Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • Select your wireless network's name.
  • If your wireless network name does not display in the list, select Enter New Network Name.
  • Type your wireless network's name and the password (WEP or WPA key) in the respective field and touch Done.

Print Wireless Test report:

  • On your HP printer control panel, touch Wireless and choose Settings.
  • Now, touch Print Reports > Display Network Configuration or Print Wireless Test Report.

Disable the Firewall:

  • Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  • Choose Network and click Troubleshooting Firewalls.
  • If you find any Firewall with the Enabled status, click Disable.
  • Once you have disabled all the Firewalls, try using your HP ENVY 5540 printer to print wirelessly.

HP ENVY 5540 NOT CONNECTING TO WIFI

Fixing Wi-Fi Direct issue:

If you tried to connect your HP ENVY 5540 printer to your mobile using Wi-Fi Direct and cannot connect, follow the steps.

  • On your HP Envy 5540 printer control panel, touch Wi-Fi Direct.
  • Touch Wi-Fi Direct Settings and turn on Wi-Fi Direct.
  • On your mobile, enable Wi-Fi.
  • Search for your printer name and click on it.
  • Enter the Wi-Fi Direct password.
  • Perform the required task and check the connection status.

Convert USB connection to Wireless network:

If you have connected your printer and the computer using a USB cable, you cannot connect it with Wi-Fi. Here are the steps for converting a USB connection to a Wireless network.

  • On your computer, open the Start menu.
  • Select All Programs and click HP.
  • Choose the folder of your printer.
  • Click on the Printer Setup & Software option.
  • Select Convert a USB-connected printer to wireless.

HP ENVY 5540 SCANNER NOT WORKING

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor:

If you face any issue in scanning, use HP Print and Scan Doctor to solve the scanning issue.

  • Check whether the paper is loaded into the input tray and the printer is turned on.
  • On your computer, download HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  • Follow the prompts and complete the installation process.
  • Open HP Print and Scan Doctor, click Start and select your HP ENVY 5540 printer. Then, click the Fix Scanning button.
  • Follow the instructions and solve the scanning problem.

Clean the Scanner:

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  • Lift the scanner lid.
  • Using a lint-free cloth, wipe the scanner glass, glass strip, and the white background under the scanner cover.
  • Finally, connect the power cord and turn on the printer.
